Chalcedony gems are not commonly spoken of these days but you may be familiar with some other members of the colorful Quartz family; Amethyst, Carnelian, Chrysocolla, Chrysoprase, Jasper, Sard and Sardonyx to name a few.
All of these members of the Quartz family differ only in their degree of translucence, color and color-patterns. Even these overlap to a confusing degree with Chalcedony being described as grayish blue in one reference, green in another and as “the bright red of Chalcedony” in a third.
Throughout history people have used a Chalcedony to engrave seals and signets, with many early examples of cylindrical seals with cuniform writing from c. 2,500 BC and even earlier forms of amulets and talisman stones from very early prehistoric eras.
In the middle ages it was fashionable to wear and give as gifts of jewellery an engraved Chalcedony (in one form or another), set in rings, necklaces and jewellery of all types, to give the protection of a talisman.
“Wear a Chalcedony that is engraved with a man holding his right hand aloft to gain protection from all evil chance, drive away phantoms and evil visions of the night.”
“Gives the wearer health, safety in travel and success in lawsuits.”
