Emerald gems have cast their spell on humans since before written record.
Emerald crystals that have been smoothed and drilled have been found in prehistoric graves and there is evidence of mining in Egypt (Jebel Zabarah) and in meso-America of the area now known as Colombia, that occurred before the written word.
Amulets and protective talisman gems made from Emeralds were held in ancient India to produce Gyana (the state of ‘Knowledge of the Soul and Eternity‘).
On May 28, 1198 AD Pope Innocent III sent 4 gifts of jewellery to King Richard the Lion-Heart. The 4 rings, each set with a precious gemstone (Emerald, Sapphire, Garnet & Topaz), had a special symbolic significance for the Pope.

In total agreement with the ancient Egyptians, Albertus Magnus wrote in 1515 that light colored Emerald gems worked best for magical purposes but he added his own unique twist.
Albertus declared that light colored Emeralds were only found in the nest of a Griffon.
Morales wrote in 1604 that,
"Emerald jewellery would allow the wearer to foreshadow future events, reveal the truth and dispel enchantments."
In an enigmatic statement recorded in 1885, Pitra claims that Emerald gems, carved with a scarab on the top and a standing Isis below,
