Pearl gems are unique among gemstones in that, although a special mineral form of calcium carbonate, it is not a stone at all.  This has never kept Pearls from being considered precious enough to appear in royal crowns, ecclesiastic jewellery and always as a most treasured, even royal gift, such as the "Traveler" Pearl.

In the pantheon of precious birthstones, one trait typical of the most esteemed is their durability.  Diamond, with its Moh’s hardness of 10, the corundum gems - Ruby and Sapphire at 9, the Beryls - Aquamarine and Emerald, even the Carnelians and Agates are durable gems that take a fine polish.

Pearls need no polish and the magical beauty of their translucent iridescence has made up for a softness of around 3 on the Moh‘s scale.  They have been a prime choice as gift ideas since the first proto-human found a Pearl in its oyster dinner and gave the shiny marvel as a gift to a loved one.

The addition of Pearls to the roll call of birthstones has been fully accepted with open arms in modern times.  Although Pearls are found among the birthstones of the ancient Mystic and Ayurvedic lists, in the past, only the Arabic birthstone tradition embraced the Pearl as natal stone for June.

Acknowledged as a first attempt at a commercial selection of birthstones, based on historic traditions, the German birthstones list c.1400 adds the Pearl as birthstone for the month of November.

Now one of the most widely accepted list of natal stones is the modern version compiled originally by the jewelry manufacturers and retailers in 1912 in the USA.  This birthstones list re-established the Arab tradition of the Pearl as birthstone for the month of June.
